An ammonite was a shelled, sea dwelling creature that is similar to a cuttlefish. they first appeared about 450 million years ago and most went extinct in the Cretaceous Period, 66 million years ago.
there were many species of ammonites and their sizes could range from just a few millimetres to a couple of meters. the largest ever fossil to be found is 1.8 metres in diameter and its not even complete. If it were complete, it could have been from 2.5-3.5 metres!!
